My research is in the development of better density functionals for materials, with applications to high-throughput materials discovery. My doctoral research focused on developing density functional approximations by hand that were constrained to physical laws and small datasets. In my later academic work, I built workflows to apply these approximations to build large open-source databases of materials properties, such as thermodynamic synthesizability, electronic conductivity, and magnetism. With Microsoft Research, I will explore how physics-informed machine-learning can systematically improve our models of materials.
