The Database Group at Microsoft Research was established in 1996. The group was managed by David Lomet and subsequently by Donald Kossmann. In 2020, the Database Group merged with the Data Management, Mining and Exploration (DMX) Group, forming the current Data Systems Group. The Data Systems group is managed by Surajit Chaudhuri.
