Is there such a thing as the wisdom of the crowd?<\/p>\n<p>New research presented at this year\u2019s <a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2015\" href=\"http:\/\/ijcai-15.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a> examines crowd wisdom in the context of social networks &#8212; specifically the ever-important restaurant critiques.<\/p>\n<p><em><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"How Robust is the Wisdom of the Crowds?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tau.ac.il\/~nogaa\/PDFS\/ijcai15.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">How Robust is the Wisdom of the Crowds?<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><\/em> is just one of the 20 papers Microsoft researchers and their artificial intelligence collaborators from around the world will present at the biannual conference, which begins Saturday in Buenos Aires. As the main international gathering of AI researchers, its proceedings span multiple disciplines, including <a title=\"Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence research at Microsoft\" href=\"https:\/\/new-cm-edgedigital.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/research-area\/intelligence-machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\">machine learning<\/a>, computational sustainability and even the arts.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Eric Horvitz\" href=\"https:\/\/new-cm-edgedigital.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/people\/horvitz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eric Horvitz<\/a>, renowned for his work in artificial intelligence and a distinguished scientist and managing director of the <a title=\"Redmond research lab\" href=\"https:\/\/new-cm-edgedigital.pages.dev\/en-us\/research\/lab\/microsoft-research-redmond\/\" target=\"_blank\">Redmond research lab<\/a>, contributed to two research papers being presented at IJCAI:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append glyph-append-open-in-new-tab glyph-append-xsmall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Metareasoning for Planning Under Uncertainty\" href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1505.00399\" target=\"_blank\">Metareasoning for Planning Under Uncertainty<span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span><\/a><\/em> describes the latest advance in a long tradition of research by Horvitz on giving computing systems the ability to do self-reflection or \u201cmetareasoning,\u201d methods that can give computers the ability to observe and guide their own problem solving. The new work shows how metareasoning can guide the planning of long sequences of actions in challenging, time-critical environments.<\/li>\n<li><em><a class=\"msr-external-link glyph-append
