When the users participating\r\nin the connection are mobile, these resources must be reallocated as\r\nthe users move in a manner so that the connection is not disrupted.\r\nThis dissertation contributes a set of algorithms for supporting\r\nconnection mobility through efficient and, in certain cases, optimal\r\nuse of these network resources.\r\n \r\nIn the first part of this thesis, we examine various techniques for\r\nallocating wireless channel resources to connections. We define three\r\nimportant practical problems in channel allocation faced by network\r\nengineers. We then derive new and optimal admission control\r\npolicies for each of these problems. We further show that the optimal\r\npolicies provide significant performance gains over other previously\r\nproposed policies. We also develop computationally-efficient\r\nalgorithms for deploying these optimal policies in real-time at the\r\n \r\nIn the second part of this thesis, we examine ways of rerouting the\r\nconnections of mobile users so that the wired link resources are\r\nutilized efficiently.  We propose, implement, and experimentally and\r\nanalytically evaluate the performance of several connection rerouting\r\nschemes.  Our study shows that one of our schemes is particularly well\r\nsuited for performing connection rerouting. This scheme operates in\r\ntwo phases: a real-time phase where a reroute operation is\r\nexecuted without causing any disruption to user traffic, and a\r\nnon-real-time phase where more efficient reroutes are effected.\r\n \r\nIn the third and final part of this thesis, we examine ways of\r\nefficiently utilizing the computational resources in the network.  We\r\nstudy policies for migrating user agents, which act as proxies for\r\nmobile users, as users move.  We show that two simple threshold\r\npolicies that we propose, a Count policy which limits the number of\r\nagents in each server and a Distance policy which gives preference to\r\nmigration of agents that are farther away from their users, deliver\r\nexcellent performance across a wide range of system parameters and\r\nconfigurations.<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A multimedia connection in a wireless network typically utilizes three important network resources: wireless link resources, wired link resources and network server resources.
