The Internet today is highly vulnerable to Internet catastrophes:
\nevents in which an exceptionally successful Internet
\npathogen, like a worm or email virus, causes data
\nloss on a significant percentage of the computers connected
\nto the Internet. Incidents of successful wide-scale
\npathogens are becoming increasingly common on the Internet
\ntoday, as exemplified by the Code Red and related
\nworms [6] and LoveBug and other recent email viruses.
\nGiven the ease with which someone can augment such Internet
\npathogens to erase data on the hosts that they infect,
\nit is only a matter of time before Internet catastrophes occur
